Pursue Simplicity: Tidy Up Tips From An Expert Part 1

It’s easy to get buried in the demands most of us face every day. Work, kids, deadlines, laundry, holidays that sneak up, etc. Add in the stress that can come with buying and selling a home, and you can get overwhelmed quickly. What if tidying up your home could alleviate the big stressors in your life? Could it be that simple? We’ll show you in this two-part blog series just how easy it can be! Here, we’re going to go through the highlights of the little turquoise book that took the world by storm, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo.  In this life-changing book, Kondo discusses how you can change your busy life with tidy up tips. These tips will help you declutter your home and ultimately your life. What a good way to begin the journey of selling your home, or it may be the best way to begin your new life in your new dream home.

Tip #1: Start By Categories…Not By Rooms

Most times people planning to tidy up begin by tackling rooms. Try this: tackle categories. Kondo suggests beginning with clothing because they’re the least emotionally loaded. Kondo suggests to “put blinders on” when you come across something nostalgic, set it aside and stay focused on the category at hand.

Tip#2: Develop A System

Develop a tidy up system that will stick. If you begin tidying up and never finish, you’ll be “tidying up” forever. Develop a system that allows you to categorize your belongings, go through what you need and do not need, and stick with it.

Tip #3 Ask Your Belongings A Question

Sounds silly but this tip is effective. Look at each one of your belongings and ask yourself, “does this item bring me joy?” If yes, it stays. If no, it’s gone.

Tip #4 Don’t Repurpose Old Clothing For Loungewear

How many times have your repurposed an old shirt for loungewear? Kondo says this is a mistake. You have pajamas and dedicated loungewear. Don’t save an old ratty shirt when you have clothes specifically for lounging anyway.

Tip #5 Scan and Recycle

Don’t keep papers you don’t need. Scan the important legal documents you need so you have a backup, and get rid of papers you don’t need any longer.
